“who am i?”

A lot of us are endlessly creating ourselves, destroying our identity in the middle of the night and piecing ourselves back together without trying to be too negative while simultaneously pulling ideas, traits and aesthetics produced by alternative/popular media. It’s hard to think that we’re a unique, original individual that created ourselves on our own. When really, ourselves, the personality that changed overtime and the person we grew into today was put together by your parents/family’s upbringing, rebelling against that idea while still holding onto some sort of familiar traditions. You are the culmination of your ancestors paving the way today, the constant and ever-changing technology of “today”, media consumption and more importantly the internet.

All of the recipes you post on Facebook, discovering different genders and sexualities and all of your posts and things of that nature come from not you who are, but by what you’re influenced by. I know it sounds weird, I’m not discrediting or devaluing who you are and the progress you made to become the amazing being you are now, I’m proposing to think about what made you the person you are today. It’s difficult to think about, but the more you delve into this idea that your identity was influenced by so and so, you can think about everything you picked and chose to follow. It’s a pretty neat process especially with advertisements and all of “societal standards” that push social drinking, hypersexuality and being thin on the nation’s populations. Not many of us fit the mold, but many of us can and continue to love ourselves and become the person we want. That’s pretty cool, actually.

Another thing that’s amazing about time and progression the idea of “originality doesn’t exist” as you may think that every thought has already been thunk, every art piece has already been created and there’s no possible way anyone could continue to be as innovative or advanced as those old folk and young kids making these technological feats. HOwever! All of things, ideas and among all of the information on the internet, books and even your family members, they can serve as web/pool of inspiration for you to nitpick and carve away at for you to create something new, innovative and creative. It’s all here for you. With that being known and said, it’s important to remember that we can pick, conform or modify our identity, but give credit where it’s due.
